8 Ab Friendly Foods

20140806-160744-58064620.jpgSo, for the past few months, I’ve been getting questions about how to get Abs. I wish I could say that there is a magic pill or one specific exercise to do that will sculpt amazing abs and I wish that I could say that once you get them, they stay forever.  Unfortunately, there is no short cut to getting abs and there is a on going commitment to your fitness and nutrition to keep your abs.  With that being said, I will share with you 8 foods that you should incorporate into your diet that are ab friendly. When you couple that with a good workout regimen, you will see amazing results.  I didn’t start to get abs until I checked my diet, I was working out like crazy but eating like crap and you know how the saying goes, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet.”  As hard as this was to adjust to, it made so much sense when I continued with my fitness programs like Insanity and T25, but followed their meal plans and then I just made a focus to make my meals 80% clean. (I still have my cheat days and my abs are still in tact!)

20140806-160923-58163235.jpgHere are a list of foods to eat, that are ab friendly:
  • Kale
  • Salmon & Tuna
  • Eggs
  • Nuts, especially almonds
  • Apples
  • Berries
  • Plain Greek Yogurt
  • Quinoa
These items are staples in my kitchen and are always on my grocery list because they are so versatile, they are super clean, and can be easily incorporated into my meals.  Now, I’m not saying that this is all that you should eat, but I will say that I eat these foods A LOT.
So here are some suggestions for meals and snacks:
  • Kale Salad with Tuna and Hard Boiled Egg & Avocado
  • Plain Greek Yogurt Parfaits with Mixed Berries (you can pre make these ahead of time using frozen berries in small tupperware containers)
  • Apple Slices with about 10 almonds (or a Tbsp on Peanut Butter)
  • Apple Berry Fruit Salad – Take one apple (diced), handful of berries, and a 3 tbsp of plain greek yogurt, a bit of honey and cinnamon, mix together and enjoy.
  • Salmon with Quinoa and Sautéed Kale or Spinach
  • Egg white omelet packed with veggies (or frittata)
  • Quinoa Salad – cooked quinoa with tomatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, olives and grilled chicken, serve with a low fat vinegar based dressing

The key is to experiment with these foods and add in other foods that are clean (without preservatives, refined sugars, and other chemicals).  To learn more about clean eating and how to incorporate it into your diet, download my free Clean Eating Guide.

20140806-160925-58165492.jpgAs you continue to focus on cleaning up your diet, don’t forget to add in a good fitness program. I love working out at home with programs like P90X3, Les Mills Combat, Insanity, Focus T25 or now I’m doing PIYO.  I love these programs because all of them focus on HIIT workouts or complex movements that really work the entire body in a short amount time, but also work the core.  All of these programs have helped me to get my results and to maintain my results.

Bonus Points:

  • Aim to keep the sugary drinks, snacks, candies, and alcohol to a minimum. I will be 100% with you and say that yes, I do partake in these “Ab Faux Pas Foods” but everything in moderation and I aim to keep my sugar intake to a minimum.  Take a look the labels of the foods that you are eating and as you are looking at the calorie count, also look at the ingredient list (are there foods you can’t pronounce or is sugar one of the top 3 ingredients). Also check to see how much sugar is in your foods, drinks, condiments, sauces, etc you might be surprised, but you also might be surprised at how your body changes by eliminating/minimizing those items
  • Drink tons of water! I used to hate drinking water, but now that I consume at least half my weight in ounces each day, I have noticed that I am not as bloated and my digestion has improved by staying hydrated.
  • Keep the stress low. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is released when you are stressed and it is also linked to belly fat.  When your body is in constant stress mode, your body releases cortisol but if there is a s steady flow of cortisol flowing through your system, you can see an increase of fat accumulation around the middle.

Ultimately, just know that there is no quick fix or trick, it’s all about eating clean, training mean, and staying serene…consistently…to get and maintain a whittled mid-section. I hope this helps and if you any other questions feel free to comment below.  Also, don’t forget to grab your free copy of the Clean Eating Guide by visiting 🙂

February Progress

I can’t believe that it’s been one year since I really dedicated my life to eating cleaner and working out consistently. I decided to really commit after I noticed that I wasn’t getting the results I was looking for and when I did get results they were fleeting and never lasted. On this journey of health, fitness and wellness, I’m learning that you can’t do this for the here and now. You have to truly make this a lifestyle.

When I made the commitment, I started on my nutrition first. The body you want (in terms of how you look and how you feel) starts with what you put into your body. For 21 Days I was eating 100% clean and taking additional supplements to reset my body. I didn’t do one minute of exercise, yet I lost 12 pounds and saw my energy increase and some issues that I was experiencing decrease.

From February until the rest of 2013 I committed to and completed Les Mills Combat, 3rd round of Insanity, TurboFire and Focus T25. With each program I found myself getting stronger and I felt better about myself. I was now getting “off the scale” results like more confidence, sleeping better, improved posture, and looking and feeling like a million bucks.

I start P90X3 on Monday and I’m super excited about it. I’m not looking to lose weight or anything like that, just to simply challenge myself and improve my strength.

This is just a reminder that if you have a goal of being healthier and more fit, make your goal a lifestyle and it will be so much easier to get the results you are looking for!

How to Get Abs (Plus 4 ab blasting moves that I love!)

Many people ask me questions about working on the midsection/abs/core. Especially, when it comes to getting a 6 pack. To be honest, I was always a person who could “feel my abs” but I simply couldn’t see them. They were always covered by, what my old trainer said, “a layer of insulation”. He was trying not to hurt my feelings with the word Fat. Yes, my abs were covered by a layer of fat!!! No matter how hard I tried or worked out, nothing seemed to help me to see the definition in my abs.

That was until I decided to test the theory that abs were truly made in the kitchen and then maintained in the gym. I continued with my same workout (at the time Insanity) but this round I decided to also focus on eating as clean as possible and didn’t you know that after my 60 days with Shaun T kicking my butt, I had abs – that I could see and feel!!!

So, for those of you looking to get abs this year, start in the kitchen. Eat clean, try shakeology, drink more water and less soda, eat more fruits and veggies less junk and refined sugar. Then find a fitness regimen that will burn fat and build muscle, like a HIIT or resistance training program like Insanity, TurboFire or P90X3. Lastly, stick with it and watch your results show up!! Commitment and consistency are the name of the game.

Today I posted a video on my FB page where I show 4 moves that I love doing to help maintain my core and keep my abs intact. Try doing each move for 30 seconds then rest for 10 seconds in between each move. Work to repeat this circuit 2-3 times.

What have you done to get abs and keep abs???

Getting Ready for Vegas with Insanity AND Les Mills Combat

photo-1I am 8 days away from heading to Las Vegas for the Beachbody Coach Summit and I will surrounded by some of the most fit people that I know, which means that the next fews days are going to super focused on eating clean and training mean!   I am on Week 7 of Insanity, but have decided to also do Les Mills Combat for Two-A-Days!  I know that might seem a bit extreme, but we will also be doing group workouts live with some of the Celebrity Trainers and that includes Shaun T and the Dan and Rachel of Les Mills Combat.  And I want to be ready to rock and roll with the best of them.

Most people aren’t familiar with Les Mills Combat but was one of the programs that really shaped my shoulders and glutes and shredded my abs and core.  What makes the program so great is that it incorporates 6 different kinds of martial arts like boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, karate, and tae kwan do.  After I get back from Las Vegas, I will be starting a full blown program of Les Mills Combat! If you want to learn more about the program, check out the video below.  Also, this month there is a Les Mills Combat Challenge pack on sale. If you are interested after checking out the video, click to here to learn more about the program. If you want to join me on July 8th for a round of Les Mills Combat, I’d love to have you join me!

How To Get Your Loved Ones To Get Healthy

photoYesterday, a good friend of mine sent me a message regarding his girlfriend.  I have known for years and know that he is one of the most disciplined people I know when it comes to his health, fitness, and wellness.  However, he is becoming frustrated because his girlfriend, whom he cares about deeply, is not quite as disciplined in that area.  He wanted to know how he could get her to start working out and eating healthier.  Here are some tips that I gave him:

  • Work With The Willing: You have to understand that not everyone puts “Health, Wellness, or Fitness” as their top priorities and if this is the case with your loved one, it may be very difficult to get them to want to workout with you or eat healthy.  It doesn’t matter how much begging, nagging, or “suggesting” you do, if they aren’t ready, they probably won’t do it.  The best way is to lead by example and hope that they will see your results and lifestyle and get curious. Never make them feel bad about themselves for not wanting to eat healthy or workout. There may be some self image or coincidence issues that they have and by making them feel bad, will only make it worse and push them further away.
  • Do Things That They Want To Do: Maybe they are not interested for going on a 5 mile jog with you or doing a program like Insanity, so when you ask them to workout or go to the gym, they may say No, because they don’t like doing what you like to do. If you don’t mind making sacrifices with your workout, ask them what they would want to do and do it with them. This may mean that you find yourself trading in the free weights for a Zumba class or simply slowing things down and taking a walk or doing Yoga. If they feel that you are being considerate and making sacrifices, they may seize the moment.
  • Cook In…Together: Instead of going to eat or going to happy hour, do more cooking at home and cook together. Find recipes that are different and healthy and cook them together. This can be a great way to spend time together and try new things together.  Or maybe you can pack a lunch and go for a picnic or meet them for lunch.  Also, make sure to keep your house stocked with healthy foods and snacks, so when they are at your place the only option is to eat healthy.

I know it can be frustrating, but giving these tips a try may create a whole new way for you to bond with your loved ones, do and try something different, and help them to start adopting a healthier lifestyle.  What other ways do you try to encourage your loved ones to get healthier and fit?

I Can’t Believe I Ate That (Recap of my Gluttonous Holiday Weekend)

Well, as much as I had a blast seeing my friends in Chicago, I am very happy to be heading home and getting back on to my schedule. Even moreso, back to my clean eating regimen.

This weekend my diet was reminiscent to my college diet which consisted of heavy, fat laden, refined and processed foods and copious amounts of ice cream and margaritas.

Not my finest moment, but it happened. And I’m not going to kick myself for abandoning clean eating or let this continue to throw me off track.

Instead, I am going to carefully plan out the next few days by creating a 7 day clean eating meal plan that will include a 3 Day Shakeology Cleanse to help flush out some of the crap and undo some of the damage I did, then finish off with a strict 4 clean eating plan taken from the Ultimate Reset. I know that Shakeology and the Ultimate Reset helped me to lose a total of 15 pounds, so that is what I will stick with to get back on track. I also start Month 2 of Insanity today which should help me as well.

Weekends, especially holiday weekends, can trip us up if we are not careful, but the great thing about weekends is that we have Mondays (or in my case Tuesdays) to pick up the pieces and get back on the saddle.  If you had a weekend like mine, no worries, all of your hard work doesn’t have to be in vain.  Today is a new day and just re-commit yourself to your healthy and fit lifestyle, because I know I will. 🙂

Love Your Workout & Have Some Fun!

Some people don’t like to workout because it’s not fun.  I am one of those people, in everything that I do, I try to make it fun and enjoyable.  Hence, why I’m not really into running, because I tend to get bored with it.  I will chalk it up to my self diagnosed ADD.  Every time that I go for a run, even though I know that my fitness and cardio levels are pretty good and my previous background running track, I could actually do quite well running…I just don’t enjoy it.  So, I don’t do it.  However, I don’t let that stop me from finding workouts that I do enjoy.  For me, I love home fitness programs like Insanity, Les Mills Combat, P90X, and TurboFire because I can work out at home, they all have great music to keep me pumped, and I relate to the trainers.

The key is to find out what you are looking for in a workout and what will you enjoy.  I have a friend who loves to dance and loves music, but hates “working out”.  I recommended that she look for a hip hop dance class or take a salsa or belly dancing class.  She agreed and 6 months later she has dropped 20 pounds and has the cutest figure now, because she attends 4 dance classes a week at her local YMCA and she loves it.  She is burning calories doing things that she enjoys.  Think about what you enjoy that is physical and find ways to incorporate more of that into your daily life.

When you make your workouts fun, you tend to look forward to your upcoming sweat session instead of looking at it like a chore.   Go out there and find your “soulmate workout”!  If you would like to check out really great at home fitness programs, click here to learn more!
