5 Keys to Get Lasting Results with your Health & Fitness

As a Personal Trainer and Healthy Lifestyle Coach, I have many people who come to me looking for quick results with their health and fitness. The reality is, they didn’t get to their current situation overnight. If you want results, more importantly results that will last, it will not happen overnight. It will require Hard Work and Patience. Period. Here are a few tips on how to get mentally prepared for achieving those results that you are looking for.

  1.  Make a decision. When we make a decision, we are telling ourselves that we are making the commitment to do whatever it takes to make that change. That is what making a decision is all about it, it is putting a stake in the ground, drawing a line in the sand, it’s saying enough is enough.
  2. Get Informed. Understand what will be required of you and from you to make these changes happen. This may mean making sacrifices and compromises. It may mean doing things that you don’t necessarily want to do, but in the end it will benefit you (like waking up early, cutting out TV, or replacing those french fries with a salad).
  3. Be patient. I know that it is difficult when you are making strides but you don’t see or feel like you are making progress. We live in a “microwave society” where everyone wants everything to be quick, fast and in a hurry. Well when it comes to lasting, life changing results, that is not the road you want to take. Change takes time and if you keep that in your mind, it will make the process (because it is a process) much easier.
  4. Get Assistance. If you find that you need more help to stay consistent, on track, and committed to your journey for change, it is okay, actually it is highly recommended, that you find an accountability partner, support group or even a coach (like me), to help you to stay focused. It’s always easier to reach your results when you feel like you aren’t going it alone.
  5. Track and Celebrate Progress. As I mentioned, this will be a journey, not a quick fix and although you may feel like you are not making strides, trust me, you are. Taking photos, measurements, journaling your journey, blogging, or creating videos to document your path to change, can give you that boost of confidence that you are on the right track. Don’t be ashamed to celebrate a victory no matter how big or small it may seem!

I know that you have it in you to get the results that you have always wanted, but it all starts with you making that decision. If you need help, encouragement, tips, or support to get the results that you are looking for click here so we can connect.

4 Reasons You’re Gaining Weight Even Though You’re Working Out

As a Personal Trainer & Beachbody Coach, I work with tons of people on a daily basis to get them started on their fitness and weight loss journey, but one of the biggest complaints I hear within the first few days or even weeks of working out, is “I’m still gaining weight! This isn’t working!” Then they end up quitting their fitness program.  I want to tell you, to keep going, if you are in this boat!   Why? Because in most cases, this weight gain is only temporary and will correct itself pretty quickly.

For most people in this boat, you are not gaining fat, but instead it is water weight.  When you are working out, you are building muscle which means that you are tearing your muscle fibers and then your body is working hard to repair and heal those tears.  When this happens, your muscles become inflamed, which signal your body to go into healing mode which requires a lot of fluid to facilitate the healing process.  Eventually, your body will realize that you are simply building muscle and it will not go into heavy inflammation mode.   So stick with it and keep on working out with your program.

However, there may be other factors to consider and tips to help you combat them:

  • Poor Diet: You can’t out exercise a bad diet, so if you are working out consistently but eating a poor diet, chances are you will still gain weight. Focus on Eating Clean, which means not consuming tons of foods loaded with preservatives, junk, and refined sugars.  To learn more about Clean Eating, check out my free Clean Eating Guide to help you –
  • Not Eating Enough: Also, if you are not eating enough, you could also gain weight. You could actually be creating hormonal imbalances or causing your body to hold on to fat to use for energy.  If you are using a Beachbody home fitness program, then you have a Nutrition Guide that you will help you figure out what to eat to help you reach your goals. Also, you can start to add Shakeology to your daily routine to make sure that you are getting enough of the nutrients and vitamins you need to fuel your body. (To grab your Fitness Program and Shakeoogy, click here)
  • Stress: If you are overstressed with work, your relationships, personal life, etc, your body could be releasing the stress hormone Cortisol into your body, which can definitely cause you to gain weight, especially in your midsection.  Try to find ways to relax and unwind, try journaling, going for a walk after work, having a date night with your spouse, or even working on a budget to help you manage your finances. Ideally, find ways to reduce your stress and you may see a difference.
  • Medical Conditions: Some of you may have a medical condition or an underlying condistion that you are not aware of, which may require you to schedule an appointment with your doctor to check on other factors like your thyroid, adrenal glands, and other factors.

Hopefully, this helps you to get more understanding about why you may be gaining weight and also to give you some clarity to keep you on track to reaching your goals. If you have other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and we can work on a plan to get you back on track!

Let the PIYO Begin!

Okay, I am continuing on with my evolving fitness journey, this time with PIYO! For the next two months I will be focusing on gaining strength and flexibility, without using weights.

The program takes the best moves from Pilates and Yoga to create a high intensity, yet low impact workout. My goal is to get more definition in my legs/arms/back, build up the booty, and develop a tighter and stronger core, all while getting more flexible.

This will be a very different workout approach as I am now obsessed with weights and crazy HIIT workouts, but I think my body will welcome the change and the rest on the joints. I will post progress photos along the way and share my thoughts about the program.

If you want to learn more about the program, check out this video or comment below to let me know and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Core & Booty Blaster Move

Here’s a great exercise to work on your core and your glutes. Some keys to success with this move:

1⃣Keep your core tight the entire time by pulling your belly button in
2⃣Don’t swing your leg, create a 1 second isomeric hold in between the two moves
3⃣Try not to arch your back when you extend your leg
4⃣Squeeze and crunch your core when you bring your leg in to your forehead
5⃣Don’t forget to breathe 😤

Start Your Day Strong

Start your day Strong | Allison TIbbs Fitness

How you start your day can definitely set the tone for how the rest of your day goes.  I say this all the time and I will continue to stick to my guns on this one.  When I started working out and getting myself “back together”…I realized how important my mornings truly were. My morning routine starts at 6:30AM where I wake up and begin with reading the bible, journaling, and praying. After that, I do my workout for the day. I typically workout 6 times a week for 30 – 45 minutes.  Right now I’m currently doing P90X3 to build muscle and sculpt my body, but I also throw in some Yoga afterwards.

After my workout and shower, it’s time for breakfast where I also go through my to-do list and mentally prepare for the day. During this time, I focus solely on myself, I don’t answer the phone, text others, or even check email.  I use it to get myself centered and to create balance in my day, because as a personal trainer and coach, I spend a lot of time working with people and connecting with people to help them reach their goals. This takes a lot out of me, because I absolutely love it and give my all.

But I have now taught a lot of my clients to do the same thing, even if it is only 15 minutes a day in the morning that you dedicate to yourself to get mentally, emotionally, spiritually and/or physically prepared for the day, it can make a HUGE difference in how you approach the day, handle stressful situations and how you deal with people.  Do you take time for yourself? If not, what is one thing that you can do every single morning for the next 30 days to help to create more balance and peace in your life?  Comment below, I’d love to hear about it!

How to Get Abs (Plus 4 ab blasting moves that I love!)

Many people ask me questions about working on the midsection/abs/core. Especially, when it comes to getting a 6 pack. To be honest, I was always a person who could “feel my abs” but I simply couldn’t see them. They were always covered by, what my old trainer said, “a layer of insulation”. He was trying not to hurt my feelings with the word Fat. Yes, my abs were covered by a layer of fat!!! No matter how hard I tried or worked out, nothing seemed to help me to see the definition in my abs.

That was until I decided to test the theory that abs were truly made in the kitchen and then maintained in the gym. I continued with my same workout (at the time Insanity) but this round I decided to also focus on eating as clean as possible and didn’t you know that after my 60 days with Shaun T kicking my butt, I had abs – that I could see and feel!!!

So, for those of you looking to get abs this year, start in the kitchen. Eat clean, try shakeology, drink more water and less soda, eat more fruits and veggies less junk and refined sugar. Then find a fitness regimen that will burn fat and build muscle, like a HIIT or resistance training program like Insanity, TurboFire or P90X3. Lastly, stick with it and watch your results show up!! Commitment and consistency are the name of the game.

Today I posted a video on my FB page where I show 4 moves that I love doing to help maintain my core and keep my abs intact. Try doing each move for 30 seconds then rest for 10 seconds in between each move. Work to repeat this circuit 2-3 times.

What have you done to get abs and keep abs???

Can’t Stay Committed? Start with your “WHY?”

Happy New Year! As we start off a new year (that I must say I am super excited about), many people have taken the time to write down their goals for year or commit (or recommit) themselves to certain things in their life.  Health and fitness goals/resolutions are among the top areas that people want to focus on in the new year. Which is totally understandable, coming off of a season packed with holiday snacks, meals,  and treats and cold weather that makes you want to do anything but exercise.  But nonetheless, it is a new year and I commend anyone who decides to star the year off with improved health and fitness.

However, most people don’t realize their goals or resolutions to be healthier, lose weight, drink more water, eat more veggies, or anything else, because we soon lose motivation and the desire to pursue those things. Why? Because, let’s be honest, they come with a pretty big sacrifice – cutting out your daily Starbucks, waking up an hour earlier to workout, skipping your favorite meals, and so on.  The reality is that your desire to do these things dwindle because you have not truly committed to your motivation and your true reason WHY!   The other day I had a good friend of mine contact me saying that he wanted to join one of my upcoming challenges because he got a health wake up call that really scared him.  His reason for joining my challenge to lose weight and get healthy, just became real to him. He realized that his life would be in jeopardy if he didn’t make some changes.  His WHY was now solid, personal and urgent.

I encourage you to take some time and really think about WHY you want to lose weight. Is it just because it is something that you always say? Really think your reasons why you want to get healthy.  Here are some of the WHYs that I heard from a few of my new fitness challengers:

  • I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror and love the person looking back at me.
  • I’m tired of feeling undesirable to my husband.  I want to have more passion back in our marriage and even when he tells me I’m beautiful I don’t believe him, because of the way I look.
  • I want to be able to run around the yard with my grandkids. They always want to play with me, but because of my weight I feel like my heart is going to burst after about 3 minutes of playing with them.
  • I don’t want to have the same fate as my father, aunt, and grandmother – all three died of poor health.
  • I just want to feel happy, confident and sexy again! My divorce really threw me for a loop and it’s been a long time since I did something that made me feel good about myself. I’m ready!

If you are finding it hard to stay connected, think about your WHY and make that be your motivating factor to push through. If you need help with staying accountable, I am here to help you in any way that I can.  So don’t hesitate to reach out to me!
