My Post Vegas Detox Plan

Hand writing Time to Detox concept with blue marker on transparent wipe board.Last week, I went to Vegas with a few instructors and members of one of the studios where I teach – Dogpatch Dance & Yoga in San Francisco. While we had a great time, I definitely was off track with my nutrition.  The main culprit was that I was off my normal sleep, workout, and eating schedule, which threw me off, coupled with the lack of fresh fruits and veggies and eating at random times of the night, including a 5AM post club meal of Fried Chicken and Waffles! Now that I am back home, I am going to use this week to get back on track with my nutrition, sleep, and fitness.

Here is my plan of action, I’ll make sure to share my results with you at the end of the week:

  1. Hydration: Vegas in June is pretty hot and dry and even though I didn’t drink alcohol while I was on vacation, I didn’t drink enough water.
    • Start each day with a glass of water upon waking up is a great way to wake up the body and rev up the digestive system to facilitate a smoother detoxification process.
    • Drinking at least half my body weight (in ounces) of water is vital on all levels and should be a non-negotiable for everyone. But if you are working out, make sure to add 16 – 24 additional ounces to your daily total.
  2. Nutrient Dense Breakfast: Breakfast is such a vital meal and most of us take that for granted and either skip it completely or eat a breakfast high in fat and sugar. Each morning, I’ll be drinking Shakeology, which is a nutrient dense vegan meal replacement shake that is more like a super potent multi-vitamin & probiotic packed with superfoods, super greens, adaptogens, and more.  This not only gives me fuel, but the daily dose of dense nutrition helps moves things right along and puts the proper things into my body.
  3. Simple Lunch & Dinner: I’m not trying to be super fancy this week with my meals, I’m eliminating chicken, red meat and pork and will focus on eating a lot of fish, fruits, and veggies for most of my meals. My meals will be:
    • Kale Salads with Tuna, Beets, Hard Boiled Eggs, and Cabbage for lunch
    • Thai Curry Lentils & Spinach with Brown Rice, Garlic & Herb Salmon with Sauteed Garlic Green Beans and Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Grilled Fish Tacos with Fresh Mango Salsa & Black Beans and rice for dinner
  4. Green Smoothies for my Afternoon Snack: I love drinking Green Smoothies in the afternoon, because I typically crave something sweet and by packing a smoothie with fresh kale and some frozen fruit, it feels like treat but also helps with adding more detox friendly ingredients to my daily intake. Here’s my recipe.
  5. Special Attention to the Body: I’ll be doing Shaun T’s “Shaun Week” Fitness Challenge this week, which is sure to be a perfect addition to my nutrition plan, as I’ll be able to break a sweat and help to get rid of those Vegas toxins.  I’ll also add in some yoga with Beachbody OnDemand’s Yoga Studio program.  (If you want information on how to access this for free, comment below).
  6. Rest: One of the most important parts of this week is ensuring that my body gets caught up on its rest (although I slept for 16 hours when I returned). Our bodies use rest to help heal, reset, refresh, and recover and if we deprive our bodies of rest, the body can’t function the way it needs to. Plus, it has been shown that sleep deprivation is a big factor in weight gain. So I’ll be aiming for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
  7. Self Love: With a detox, it’s so easy to look at it as a punishment. We focus on what we are missing out on and make a big deal out of it. Instead, I am simply using this as a way to honor and respect my body. I don’t regret anything from my time in vegas and if I had to go back, I would probably have done the same thing, except eaten more macaroons! So, now that I’m back home, I am simply focusing on how lucky I am to be able to eat nourishing, healthy and fresh foods, excited to try Shaun T’s “Shaun Week” workouts, and to take time to rest and recover from one of the best Vegas trips to date!

Working Out Doesn’t Have To BORING!

Workouts don’t have to be boring!

Today I had a chat with a friend of mine who said that she desperately wants to lose 30 pounds, but she can’t seem to find a way to stay committed to working out.  Her main reason is that working out is not fun to her.  She says she gets bored and she hates having to do all of those crazy moves (that I love), like burpees, jump squats, push ups and “jumping around like a crazy person”.  She has a life motto, “I don’t do it, if it’s not fun” and that applies to working out.  So, we talked a bit more and I offered her a solution – Shaun T’s Dance Party.  My friend, Tori, is going to join my next challenge where she will commit to working out daily, drinking Shakeology daily, and staying connected, committed and consistent in pursuing her health and fitness goals. If you are like Tori, and think that exercising is boring, BUT you want to lose weight, get fit and healthy.  Then, you should join us!   Shaun T’s Dance Party is a perfect solution and it’s a lot of FUN.

Check out this video and let me know if you are interested, I can help you get started.  Also, you can join the upcoming Fitness Accountability Challenge Group to keep you focused on reaching your goals.  Join us, it will be fun. Contact me ASAP to get more information and to secure your spot in our group. 🙂

Insanity Day 25

20121115-104633.jpg

I must say that I’m really enjoying the process that my body is going through with Insanity. Over the past 4 weeks my body is definitely changing and my endurance is has drastically improved. Now I breezing through the warm ups and I’m completing the workouts without taking breaks (a feat that some of the models in the video can’t even do). I’m really pushing myself to make sure that my form is on point and I can tell the difference it is making when transforming my body.

I’ve lost an inch in my waist which is a surprise because I was quite happy with my midsection. My workout pants and shorts are now sagging a bit in the waist, which is awesome!

The fact that I’m doing this program with a challenge group of 5 people also helps to keep me accountable. When I wake up and don’t feel like pushing play, I think of the rest of my challenge group members and I know that they will be working out and checking in to our Facebook group. Many people start Insanity but it’s nice to see a group of committed people who will finish it!

I’m feeling pretty good and pumped today. Next week is the Recovery Week and luckily it falls during thanksgiving while I will be in Sedona, Arizona for the week.

If you have ever started insanity but never finished it or if you want to try it and want someone to keep you accountable, send me an email allisontibbs@beachbodycoach.com and we can get you set up to succeed!

Day 15: Fit Test #2

Yesterday I completed my second Fit Test with Insanity. I was happy to say that I saw improvements in every category.  My cardio has really improved and I was shocked at how well I was able to do the moves and my form was much better than the first time around. Actually, everyone in my Fitness Challenge saw improvements in their Fit Test.  It goes to show that if you stick with Insanity and stay committed it can really help you change your body.

Fit Test #2 Results (Fit Test #1 Results)

  • Switch Kicks: 129 (113)
  • Power Jacks: 48 (47)
  • Power Knees: 96 (91)
  • Power Jumps: 35 (33)
  • Globe Jumps: 11 (10)
  • Suicide Jumps: 17 (15)
  • Push-Up: 22 (20)
  • Low Plank Oblique: 62 (56)

While I was doing the low plank obliques, I could see how my legs and abs were beginning to lean out. It was a pretty cool angle! I’m still pumped about the program and knowing that I’m almost done with the first month is exciting, but I’m also anxious to get started on Month 2, which is even more intense.  That is when I know that I will see big improvements in my body and my cardio will INSANE!

Well today is Plyo Cardio Circuit and I’m actually sore from the Fit Test, so this should be interesting. Wish me luck!

My next challenge will start on January 7th and it will be a ChaLEAN Machine Challenge. That means any Chalene Johnson program can be used for this 60 day challenge. It should be a good time, I’ll be doing TurboFire, but she has many other programs. To learn more click on the Fitness tab of this blog to check out the different programs.

Day 11: Cardio Recovery

Gosh, I must say that I was so excited to wake up and see that Cardio Recovery was on deck this morning for Insanity.  It was nice to take a bit of a break from the plyometric and intense circuit training to do a bit of “recovery”, especially since I tweaked my groin muscle last night doing Plyometric Cardio Circuit (Day 10). However, I should point out that I still got a great workout in today, even though it was a “recovery” day.  What I love about this workout is that it focuses on deep muscle workouts, core strength, and intense stretching.  There are a lot of squats, lunges, and planks as well as some yoga poses that you hold then pulse.

Per usual, I was dripping with sweat and I could really feel my body working hard.  My goal for this week with Insanity was to focus on building my core muscles, since you don’t do crunches or floor ab exercises, I want to make sure that I’m focusing on my core so that I am able to lean out my abs.  This was a great workout to focus on the core muscles and breathing.

Overall, I’m starting to see my body changing and it’s only Day 11, but HIIT will do that to you.  I’m also excited because my challenge group is still checking in daily and staying committed by doing the workouts, drinking their Shakeology, and digging deep! This has been a great experience so far and I’d love to have you join me for my next Challenge Group.

Tomorrow is Cardio Power & Resistance then Pure Cardio AND Cardio Abs to finish the week. Here we go!

First Week of Insanity Done!

20121028-145909.jpg

Well, one week down and I feel great. The first few days are the hardest – sore muscles and a little sluggish walking up the stairs. However, I already notice how my body is improving. The warm ups are easier to complete and my form is already much better. The one thing that I do notice is that I am so hungry throughout the day. I’ve been aiming to eat smaller meals and incorporate more healthy snacks.

One thing that I am definitely going to incorporate is the BeachBody Results & Recovery formula. I spoke to one of my coaches who is also doing Insanity with us and he swears by the stuff. He says it helps to recover better and your muscles aren’t as sore. So, I’m definitely going to try it. Just placed my order before I wrote this blog.

For those of you who are considering Insanity as a workout program, I encourage it 100%. Yes, it’s tough or “bananas” as Shaun T says, but it is a program that will challenge you. There are some moments where I want to stop but I keep digging deep. When I need a short break, I take one, but I always jump right back in to it and do my best to finish strong. That is the best thing about the program and doing it in the comfort of your own home – go at your own pace but still can push yourself. When you add that to our Challenge Group members who motivate and encourage one another and Insanity Meal plan & Shakeology, you really have a recipe for health and wellness success!

If you are interested in joining my next challenge group, email me at allisontibbs@beachbodycoach.com. I can tell you more!

Insanity Day 5: Pure Cardio

This morning was Day 5 of Insanity, Pure Cardio. I must be brutally honest, this is my least favorite workouts during month 1. Mainly because it is INSANE! Haha! No seriously, I always dread Pure Cardio but when I finish it, I always feel like I’ve accomplished a major goal!

You do one minute drills of various exercises that are all cardio based – sprint drills, suicide drills, push up jacks, mountain climbers, frog jumps, etc. Also, Shaun T never calls for an official break, so take one if necessary but quickly get back in there so you don’t lose momentum. When you finish, I always laugh because Shaun T even swears!

During this workout I aim to focus not on speed but 100% on the correct form. I do this because we move so quickly through each one that it can be easy to cheat or even injure yourself with poor form. This would be my recommendation for you on this one especially if this is your first time. As I continue to do this workout and focus on form, I do notice each time I get faster and stronger.

Yes, this workout is hard or at least for me, but if you focus on your form and your breathing you can do it! Tomorrow is Plyometric Cardio Circuit…
